Name: Abby Schnelker
Sport: Varsity golf
Grade: junior
How long have you been playing golf?
“This is my third year of serious golf, but I have been playing all of my life with my family.”
What other sports do you play at FHC?
“Golf is the only sport I play for FHC.”
What is your best memory from your time playing?
“My best memory from the FHC golf team is from last year when we went to the Traverse City area for a tournament and spent a couple of nights there. We played Just Dance as a team, watched Lemonade Mouth, and did lots of other fun things that really helped me get more comfortable with the team.”
What are the strengths of this year’s team?
“Our team is strong this year because we have a lot of solid players as opposed to just one or two. Some of the really good teams in our division only do well because they have one stellar player, but I feel that our whole team is capable of posting competitive scores.”
What are your individual goals for this year’s season?
“This season, I would like to improve my chipping game. Being able to chip within just a few feet of the hole from anywhere around the green could really help to bring down my scores.”
Who is your favorite professional athlete and why?
“I’m not super familiar with the professional golf and athletic scene in general, so please take this answer with a grain of salt. Cameron Smith is probably my favorite professional golfer, only because I think his mullet is hilarious.”
Who is the biggest influence in your athletic career and why?
“My Dad has worked with me a lot on staying calm on the course. I used to cry anytime I had a bad hole and throw fits after every round. When I started taking golf more seriously, he was really firm about not doing that because it was really unhelpful for my mental game. He also used to be really adamant about pace of play, which is something that has stuck with me until today. All in all, there were a lot of “golf manners” that he helped me to learn before playing at the high school level. I believe that he’s made me a better player and teammate because of it.”
What is your favorite class this year and why?
“My favorite class this year is orchestra. I’ve always loved playing the violin and working with Mr. Pool, so being able to do those two things for a grade is really nice and refreshing.”
