After a district championship in basketball and a state championship in football, Brendan Cargill comes back for one final year at FHC. The football team had a great performance this year, however they fell short in the regional finals. The basketball team just finished their season, which ended on a heartbreaking loss to Forest Hills Northern in the regional semi-final. Cargill is a key player on the football team being a big-play scoring wide receiver. On the basketball team, he is a hustle player, shooter, and an all-state shooting guard.
FHC sports can accelerate players by changing their athletic careers for the better. Coaches from all levels here at FHC greatly contribute to producing good athletes and championship-winning teams. Furthermore, helping athletes reach their full potential, teaching athletes to be leaders on and off the field, and giving players the right mindset needed to win.
“FHC has been so beneficial to my athletic career,” Cargill said. “Being around extremely knowledgeable coaches has been amazing, and I have grown so much over the past years because of it.”
Many memories come from playing sports. Spending time with friends and teammates at practice and games, winning championships. During Cargill’s junior year, FHC Basketball won the district and made it to the regional championship. The football team also won the state championship last year.
“My favorite memories from FHC are winning the football state championship,” Cargill said. “And coming back in the 4th quarter to beat Caledonia at the buzzer in the basketball district finals.”
Being a 2-sport athlete means skills translate from sport to sport. Being a quarterback in football translates to being a baseball pitcher; being a football wide receiver helps you be more physical, big, and able to get into the paint and finish up strong. Track can help athletes with conditioning to help them be better conditioned for running.
“Basketball is extremely beneficial to catching in football,” Cargill said. “And football helps me be very physical on the basketball court.”
Being a 2-sport athlete is very important and beneficial for athletes. Playing multiple sports can reduce the risk of injury, teach athletes new things, make athletes’ high school career more enjoyable, and improve sports skills, making you a better athlete.
“Playing 2 sports has given me so many opportunities that I have never thought I could have had, and it’s been some of the best moments of my life.”
The FHC basketball program has many great coaches on the staff who develop and train players to be the best they can, and these coaches helped get Cargill to where he is now.
“The coaches have put me in the position to become the best player I can be,” Brendan said. “And it’s set me up to be amazing for my future.”
As a senior captain, Brendan has great responsibility and leadership roles on this team. Brendan talks in the huddle and on the court to his teammates all to find ways to win. He will be passing this leadership position to players like Matt Sexton, a junior who played roughly half the season before going out due to injury but will return for his senior season.
“He’s always pushing others to be their best on the court,” Sexton said. “That can help me next year as a senior to take over that leadership goal.”
