Top 5 Unsung Heroes
Top 5 Unsung Heroes

Ethan Moon and Micah Scholtens

While their names didn’t pop up much on the stat sheet, Ethan Moon and Micah Scholtens were two of the most crucial contributors to FHC Soccer’s success. The defenders came up big all season. Known for his slide tackles, Moon made play after play to limit opponents’ chances in the box, and has flown under the radar as one of the better players in the state despite notching just one goal and one assist. Scholtens is in a similar position; as a defender, his name doesn’t appear in the box scores too much, but the co-captain helped to stop shots on goal before they were even attempted. He also added three goals during the Rangers’ one-loss season

Maggie Hill

Maggie Hill has played golf at FHC all four years of her high school career. This season, she consistently and quietly posted some of the top scores for the Ranger Varsity golf team. Her most important outing this season had to have come at the state tournament. At the end of states, it was determined that FHC and Lowell were tied. However, Hill did well at the state tournament, and her score was counted to give the Rangers the edge and propel them to a third-place finish. This sneaky outing ended the Rangers’ season on a high note.

Sydney Bresnahan

Sydney Bresnahan has been a standout diver for the past three years for the FHC girls swim and dive team. This past season has been arguably the best of her three. Of the eight dual meets the Rangers have had this year, Bresnahan has placed first or second in 7 out of 8 meets. Diving is often the most overlooked part of swim and dive because it is a very short portion of the meet. However, diving contributes many points to the team’s score, and Sydney has significantly improved FHC’s results this year. Bresnahan has qualified for states her past two years, and is looking to make it her third straight.

Collin Grupe

Grupe came into the year as the third running back on the depth chart for FHC football, but a pair of injuries pushed him into a starting role. The sophomore performed quietly well in his six starts, scoring a couple of touchdowns and exploding for 133 rushing yards against Wyoming. Grupe showcased a tough running style and racked up a lot of broken tackles as the starting halfback, a position he is expected to maintain as his career continues.

Jack Porter

The JV kicker did his job during the team’s 7-2 season, grinding at practice and coming through when needed. His signature moment was a game-winning field goal as time expired to win FHC the game against Unity Christian. Coach Anthony Sultini notes Porter’s work ethic, stating his constant readiness and willingness to push himself at practice as what makes Porter the player that he is.

Top 5 Underclassmen

Alivia Offer

Sophomore golf co-captain, Alivia Offer, was undoubtedly the number one golfer on her team this year, and is a major reason why the team did as well as they did. Her lowest finish in the entire season was seventh, and her highest was first, earning her spot as an all-conference athlete. She helped lead her team to their third-place finish at States, and finished sixth individually, which gives a lot of promise for the coming seasons to be even more great.

Ciana Fors

Sophomore Ciana Fors was one of the top underclassmen swimmers and clearly stood out against the rest. She participates in many events, including the 200 medley relay (free), 50 free, 100 free, and 200 free relay. In all these events, Fors can easily place and be a natural leader on the team. Fors has been the best and has made it to the states in her 50-yard freestyle. Ciana continues to show her skills and prove that she deserves to be in the top 5.

Judah Slendebroek

Sophomore running back Judah Slendebroek was an almost perfect show of reliability for the JV football team this year. He made very few mistakes, making him the go-to player for anything. First-downs, touchdowns, and punt returns, if the ball was given to Judah, there was a very good chance that he wouldn’t bring disappointment. He was tough, and he was fast, helping bring the JV team to an almost undefeated season, ending 7-2, and he has certainly proved to be a talent worthy of Varsity status for his last two seasons at FHC.

Olivia Waller

Junior Olivia Waller, who is the best at her position, outside hitter, can create not only good offensive but also defensive plays in volleyball. Anyone who has watched her play can tell that the team trusts her, and for good reasons. Waller is always working her hardest and helped lead the Varsity Volleyball team to a decent season. They advanced in the first round of the playoffs, where their season ended. Waller helps the team every opportunity she can get, whether it be the ability to read blocks or having a good variety of hits, proving herself worthy of this list.

Miles Pell

Starting his freshman year as the first wide receiver on the JV football team, Miles Pell was quickly brought up to Varsity as a result of his talent. He very rarely dropped a pass, making plays that would almost certainly not be expected out of a freshman. The JV team definitely felt the loss of their star receiver after he got brought up, going undefeated with Miles there before finally losing two games without him. It can be very easily expected that, with Miles on Varsity for three more seasons, our record as a top football team in the state of Michigan can start to be restored.

The boys made a name for themselves after finishing this game 1-0 and keeping the heat throughout their season.

Portage Central at Rockford Varsity Boys Tennis

Rising to the challenge, the guys were eager to prove themselves in this matchup. This game was tough and fierce, which made for close points. Each solo and duo worked extremely hard to try to achieve a win in each matchup they played. Everyone worked extremely hard in this match, which ultimately led to a tie breaker after six to four, four to six, and then led to their win of ten to four.

Wyoming Central Homecoming Varsity Football

The guys are coming extremely hyped into this game, due to playing a team that they were extraordinarily hyped to beat. Having such a big crowd came with big expectations; this was our homecoming, and everybody was expecting us to win. We had many great plays, which led to a blowout by the end of the game. The feeling of winning a homecoming game was very welcoming for the players.

Portage Central JV Football

This would be huge for the JV football team to start the year 2-0. This game headed down to Kalamazoo to take on the Mustangs, who run a hard offense to stop. The boys went into halftime trailing 22-8. The boys ended up finishing strong, not allowing a single point in the second half for Portage Central. Final score 37-22. A comeback win is always a good feeling. That would propel the team a lot going into next week. That could definitely be the top win for fall sports of 2025.

Ottawa Hills Freshman Volleyball

This one was not even a contest; the Rangers smoked the Bengals all through the game. This one was definitely a confidence builder. Just what the team needed to gain some momentum for the following games. They may have played their best game of the season. They swept Ottawa Hills by 3 sets. This game was a great one to represent our volleyball program in a big way.

Top 5 Breakout Performances

Ryan Webb

Junior goalie for varsity soccer, Ryan Webb, was the best goalie in West Michigan. He had 90 saves on the year, and 11 in one game vs FHN! He was putting in work all year and practicing on the field even when he didn’t have practices. He still has one more year left, and he will be coming back better than ever for that season.

Miles Pell

Miles Pell, A standout freshman at FHC, showed such dedication on the field. He was the only freshman to make Varsity, and he didn’t let down when he started. As a freshman, he had 2 touchdowns in a single game against South Christian. In just the five games he played, he scored 5 touchdowns. He just put himself out there as a freshman, and he also dominated when he came out. He plans to come back next year and do even better.

Jake Bachert

Sophomore Jake Bachert was the best underclassman on the varsity soccer team. He had the most assists on the team and even had a hat trick against New Boston Huron. He is putting in that work, and still has two years left. Won’t be surprised if he is the best player in the state for one of those years.

Rei Hitachi

Sophomore Rei Hitachi was one of the best players on the varsity tennis this season. Coming all the way from Japan to showcase his talents. He may be here only for this season, but the things he did were remarkable. Rei made it to the state semifinals in just his first year with the team. He is a great player and will do great things next year wherever he is playing.

Ben Bachert

Senior Ben Bachert is one of the best scorers in the game of high school soccer. He had a hat-trick in many of his scoring games for the team and is a remarkable player overall. Ben was the lead scorer on the team, leading the team to an undefeated season. Sadly, this is his last season, but it sure was his best. He definitely has the ability and mindset to play at a higher level after he finishes high school.

Top 5 Clutch Moments

Ben Castillo’s one-handed, game-winning touchdown catch

On October 2, the undefeated FHC JV football team hosted the South Christian Sailors at home. It was a very close game when the Sailors got a touchdown late in the 4th quarter. The score was 14-15 after the Sailors’ successful 2-point conversion to take the lead. With almost no time left, the vision of winning for coach Sultini and the Rangers was not exactly high. The Rangers started the drive down the field, and it was looking promising until the Rangers got to 3rd down and long just inside the Sailors’ territory. As quarterback Kellen Paul took the snap, Castillo went long for the bomb down the left sideline. Paul launched a missile down the field, and Castillo, one-on-one with the DB, made the catch of the year, pulling in the throw with one hand for 6. After a successful two-point conversion, the Rangers kept their undefeated season alive.

Jack Porter’s game-winning field goal

On September 25, the undefeated FHC JV football team headed to Unity Christian. On the last drive of the game, the Rangers marched down the field while down 2 and were left at the 10-yard line, where the Rangers’ kicker, Jack Porter, marched onto the field ready to take the kick. The opposing team then tried to ice him with a timeout. Jack lined up to kick with Kellen Paul, the holder. Showing his calmness and composure, Porter drilled the ball through the uprights to get the Rangers 3 on the board, making the final score 29-28.

Varsity Soccer’s 2 goals in the final 10 minutes against Rockford

On Friday, August 22, 2025, the undefeated FHC soccer team went up against the Rockford Rams to try to continue their undefeated season. The first half ended with the Rams up 1-0 against the Rangers, who were fighting to stay undefeated. Near the end of the game, the Rangers seemed destined to lose their 7-0 season. The Rangers were down 3-1 with 10 minutes left. The Rangers knew that they had lost their hard-earned undefeated season. But in the last 10 minutes, 2 goals were scored back-to-back by both Ulrich Dongmo and Jacob Witham, while being under immense pressure to try and not lose what they have worked so hard for. The game ended 3-3, and the Rangers left the field retaining their undefeated season from clutch plays from both Ulrich Dongmo and Jacob Witham.

Ellie Palmer and Maggie Holt secure top 2 finishes late in the meet against Caledonia

On September 4, the FHC Girls swim and dive team travelled to Caledonia to face off against the Fighting Scots. The score was almost equal for most of the meet, when in the 100-yard backstroke, the 3rd to final event, junior Ellie Palmer got 1st place with a time of 1:02.57. Senior Maggie Holt backed Palmer up with 2nd place, finishing in 1:04.32. Caledonia took 3rd, but Palmer and Holt, with their 5 gained points from that race, helped secure the win. Although a low number of points in a game that close, those points, if not made by the Rangers, could have completely changed the outcome in the end, with FHC winning by 7 points.

Jack Fielder’s penalty kick goal against Grand Rapids Christian

The FHC boys varsity soccer team faced off against the Grand Rapids Christian Eagles at home on September 29. The first half of the game was scoreless, as both teams’ defenses held up strong. Rangers Cyrus Dareshori and goal keeper Ryan Webb both played phenomenal defense against the strong Eagles’ offense, with Webb recording 4 saved goals. Late in the 2nd half, GRC committed a penalty against Jack Fielder, and was gifted a penalty kick to take the lead. Fielder, with the pressure of keeping the Rangers soccer team undefeated, nailed the goal. The defense kept their end of the bargain, stopping the Eagles from tying or getting the lead for the last minutes of the second half.

Top 5 Coaches

Anthony Sultini

Sultini came into this season as a seasoned JV/Freshman Football coach with high hopes for the season. Over the course of the season, the JV football team revealed itself to be very good, starting their season undefeated through 5 games and finishing 7-2, going from a 0-7 freshman team to winning their conference. Sultini led the team with a “determined to rise” mindset, and it truly paid off for the team and the future of this program for the years to come.

Ann Offer

Offer came into this season as a first-year coach of the girls’ varsity golf team with aspirations for success. She found them with the Rangers winning the Division 2 coach of the year award, as well as coaching her team to a 1st  place finish in regionals, and 3rd third-place finish at the state finals.  Ann did not just come to this school to coach; she came here to win.

Paul Kramer

Coach Paul Kramer had led the boys’ soccer team to a 16-1-5 record, which placed them second in their division, behind Byron Center, which only had 1 conference game. They did end up losing in the first round, but that does not discredit their incredible season. Jake & Ben Bachert had an incredible standout season, contributing both skill and leadership. Coach Kramer’s passion for coaching led them to have such a great season.

Dan Bolhouse

The boys’ varsity tennis team had a great season, where they ended it with a trip to the state championship. Although they did not capture a title in any individual categories. Just making it to the States is a great accomplishment. The team also placed well in their conference and regionals. The team also did not have many seniors, with only 4. That shows how much a coach can make a team.

Ryan Schipper

The long-time cross country coach came into the season with hopes for a good season, and they did. Even with limited success, the team found great improvement within practices and through coaching. A few runners, like Lilah Yoder took first place in many meets, and Gavin O’Meara even placed first at states, breaking the 16-minute barrier. It was a season defined by improvement, which will benefit the young team to become better, faster runners in the next season.

Top 5 Losses

Varsity Football vs. Forest Hills Northern

The most anticipated game in FHC football every year is the Battle of the Hills, also known as the FHN game. The team hadn’t lost to the Huskies since 2004, so the anticipation for the game was very high. Northern was going into the game with a record of 0-2, and Central had a record of 1-1. The game was very important for both teams to prove that they are good and not to disappoint their schools. The reason for FHC’s loss was that they could not score a lot once they gained the ball. On the defensive side, the Rangers were not able to stop FHN’s plays effectively enough.  The final score was 42-10.

Varsity Soccer vs. Grand Rapids Christian

The varsity soccer team was undefeated, with the exception of one tie. The team was very excited to see how the district semifinal would play out. The boys were confident in a win because they had beaten Grand Rapids Christian during the regular season 1-0. FHC scored the first goal, exciting the team and growing their confidence in another win. Not long after, GRC was able to get the ball and score, tying the game 1-1. The final goal of the game came from GRC after a penalty shootout with only 10 minutes left in the game. Sadly, they were not able to come back, ending with a final score of 2–1.

Boys varsity tennis vs Rockford

The boys’ varsity tennis team was going up against the Rockford team in a tournament double. The homecoming match brought excitement, and the anticipation was high for the boys to win on such an important date. The team was expected to beat the Rams. The first double they won, and excitement filled the team. The Rangers were on their way to victory by winning the first match; however, FHC dropped the final two matches 4-6 and 2-6 and ended up going 1-2.

Freshman volleyball vs Portage Central

The freshman volleyball team competed in an away tournament, expected to do well at Portage Central, starting strong and winning enough matches to get to the gold bracket. Although having a strong start, the final games were a tough match-up. The team struggled with communication and trust on the court, which allowed them to be scored on. As the girls got into their own heads, they weren’t able to play the way they normally do.

Girls’ golf division 2 state finals

The girls’ golf team had a strong season, earning a spot at the Division 2 state finals with high expectations. Over the 2 championships, the Rangers had a great team performance, but it wasn’t enough to claim the title as they finished in 3rd place. They were beaten by Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingwoods; they lost by 25 strokes. Dexter finished first. Despite competitiveness and strong rounds, FHC fell just short of the championship. The team showed consistency and determination throughout the tournament. The final score was 684-659-643.
