The boys’ JV tennis season has come to an end, and it’s been a pretty good season. At the beginning of the season, a couple of the best sophomores got moved up to varsity, and there were some questions surrounding the team. The team persevered, though, and had a decent season with a record of 3-7-1. The team struggled a little bit against the better teams, but they also had a ton of close matches. The top 3 doubles made huge improvements over the season and got some wins over teams they lost to early in the year.
One of the best players on the team was junior Zain Khan, who is ready to make the jump to varsity next year. Another 2 of the standout players were freshman Jordan Pomeroy and Brayden Waller. They played 4th doubles for the team, and, in the words of coach Mitch Timyan, “Very promising for them and the future they have in the tennis program.” That is very promising, as those 2 stars have 3 more years of FHC tennis.
Though the team’s record wasn’t great, they played in a very tough conference. They had lots of close matches, a lot of which were lost, but could easily have been won, which is a good sign for the future of this team. Better teams are the better teams, though, and they will normally come out on top.
“We struggled against the better teams, but we had a lot of close matches,” coach Timyan said.
One of the team’s best matches of the season was their 3rd one against Catholic Central. The boys won 7-1, and one of the best performances from the match was from Zain Khan and Aaron Anglin as they won their doubles matches 6-0 and 6-1.
The second time they played Catholic Central, they beat them again, and also stole a win from Forest Hills Northern. Those were the boys’ 3 wins of the season. They had a super close match that ended in a tie against Forest Hills Eastern, and the 7 losses they had were from East Grand Rapids twice, Byron Center, Grand Rapids Christian twice, Forest Hills Eastern, and Holland Christian.
Improvement can always be made, especially for a JV team, as most players will be trying to be on varsity next year. The offseason is a great time to do that, but getting kids on the court could be even more important.
“We need to get some more kids into tennis,” Timyan said. “It is a fantastic sport that anyone can join and enjoy. Anyone who is thinking about playing a fall sport next year and wants to get into tennis should head to the courts and try it out.”
The kids already on the team can also improve. During the season, though, it might be the most effective way to do that, and the JV tennis team most definitely did. Huge leaps were made during the season for each and every player, and preparation for the offseason starts now.
“My favorite part of the season was playing with Bennett Schmitz,”Hudson said.
