On Thursday, October 3rd, the FHC JV football team faced off against South Christian at home. The Rangers scored first on a touchdown pass from Kellen Paul to Ian Reitzenstein for 20 yards. The Sailors then drove the ball downfield for their first touchdown of the day, tying the game.
In the second half, running back Judah Slendebroek scored a touchdown for the Rangers, giving them the lead 14-7. Late in the 4th quarter, the Rangers turned the ball over, giving the Sailors an opportunity to win the game. South Christian drove down the field, breaking many tackles to find the endzone. The Sailors attempted a 2-point conversion and succeeded, giving South Christian the lead 14-15. With 1:30 left to go, the Rangers slowly drove down the field until a 3rd and 14 with 15 seconds left. Quarterback Kellen Paul dropped back and found Ben Castillo for a one-handed touchdown at the goal line, sealing the Rangers’ win.
Coach Sultini has led this team from a 0-win team last year to being undefeated with 3 games to go. He comments on the Rangers’ success this year.
“From the team last year looking at us, wondering when that first win was going to come, to know the team that expects a win every week, that is something special moving forward, not just for the remainder of the season but varsity seasons to come.”
Sultini also added on how his team has battled back from adversity, and it has played a key role in the Rangers’ success.
“This team has been battle tested, they have been in dogfights, they have been down big and come back, that is why we are the most dangerous team in this conference.”
The team’s biggest test of the season is next week as they travel to Zeeland to take on Zeeland West. The team continues to practice daily in preparation. Jack Davidson comments on the team’s hard work in preparation for this game.
“Zeeland West runs the flat T, so we are trying to prepare to spot that. We are also trying to continue our undefeated season and not trying to get too high on ourselves and trying to stay humble because God opposes those who are arrogant but offers favor to those who are humble.”
The Rangers have played great so far this season and are hoping to continue their undefeated season.
“The team’s biggest takeaway from the game is that no matter the score, you always have to stay composed and be smart because doing something stupid in a tight game like that will cost you,” Davidson states. “Some bad penalties almost cost us, but Ben Castillo made a heck of a catch and helped us come out with the win.”
