When spring sports start back up again, that marks the upcoming conclusion of the school year. This season, the girls varsity water polo team is ready to dominate this season and end the school year with a bang.

Last year, Dennis Neat was the head coach at the beginning of the season but unfortunately left his position. Sara Fredricks, who was the assistant varsity coach and head JV coach, stepped up to fill in for Neat. This year, she is the head coach right off the bat. The girls are very excited to have her return this season. Sara played water polo throughout high school at Rockford. She was on a high school state champion water polo team, giving her one-up on all the other coaches. She knows the game as she is a very seasoned player herself so she knows how to prepare the team for any circumstance that can be thrown its way. Her passion drives her coaching career which motivates the players to strive to be the absolute best version of themselves.

Junior Olivia Oorbeck was a water polo player before but had to step back her sophomore year to due her shoulder injury that lingered on from her previous swimming season.

She expressed her feelings about coming back to the team by saying, “It has been extremely fun, although I’ve only been to one practice it has been a great experience because everyone has been so welcoming and supportive on my road back to recovery.”

The team captains this year are seniors Sydney VanLente and Sydney Bacon. They are both crucial parts of the team and are key players that will lead FH water polo to success this season.

The girls have nine away tournaments and only six home games this season. Varsity’s first official game is on Tuesday; however, some girls will be playing on Friday, March 17, at an East Kentwood JV tournament, to fill in for the spots that other teams lack. The varsity girls are doing this in order to get into shape, get extra training, and help FHC’s JV water polo team, and the other schools that may be short a few players.

Be sure to be at the varsity team’s first official game on Tuesday to kick off the season.
