As the weather turns warm again, spring sports begin. Though it might still snow some days, that does not stop the girls varsity softball team from getting as much practice as they can before their first game.

This season the team is very diverse; not having a JV team allowed some underclassmen to be a part of the team and the family that is FHC softball. The team is made up of four seniors, along with captains, Maya Holser, Lauren Halverson, and Charlotte Stephan, four juniors, two sophomores, and four freshmen. Coach Tracy Jenkins is eager and optimistic about where the season will go this year.

“I am looking forward to having a large returning group from last year’s varsity, 10 players in all. This means that this core group has at least 1 year of experience and practice with our system. There is no hard part about games. Games are the icing on the cake. They are a test of how well and hard the team has worked in practice. A measuring stick. I think we should have a nice season,” coach Jenkins explained. “We have really good senior captain leadership in Holser, Halverson, and Stephan. We should be solid on the mound with an experienced pitching staff. We have 10 returning players with a couple of freshmen who will be pushing them for playing time. The best part of this group is that the vast majority of them are solid students and citizens at Central and Northern. We will have fun.”

Along with coach Jenkins, sophomore Avery Koehler has been counting down the days until the season started. Though it’s coming quickly, the buildup to the first game is exhilarating.

“The first game is coming up and I think we are going to do well. We have been practicing every Sunday and we have been in the weight room all winter getting ready for the season to start. It has been a long wait for it to begin but I know I am ready along with the rest of the team to show what we have been working on.”

Though the weather might not be ideal for the players, they are doing as much as they can to prepare for their first game Monday, March 27, at their home field. The girls are excited to showcase what they have been working on the past couple of weeks along with their off-season. Make sure to make it out and show your support.
