Name: Joe Emerson
Grade: Junior
Sport: Varsity Football
How long have you been playing football?
“This is my first season playing football. I started kicking in June.”
What other sports (if any) do you play at FHC?
“I played soccer in my freshman and sophomore years.”
Who is your favorite professional athlete?
“My favorite professional athlete is Jude Bellingham.”
What are the strengths of this year’s team?
“This year’s team is very tight-knit, honest with each other, and willing to call each other out to make everyone and the team better, and no one is above the law, treatment, or standard of the program. Everyone is held to the same expectation, no matter how talented or how important to the team.”
What are your individual goals for this season?
“I’d like to go 100% on field goals/PATs throughout the season (I’m on track for that thus far), kick a touchback, and potentially receive an all-conference or all district honor.”
Who is the biggest influence in your athletic career and why?
“Jake Bates is my role model as a kicker. He similarly converted from a soccer background and is now a very effective, successful kicker in the NFL after working his way up from the UFL. He is also an outspoken Christian and an example of Christ each game out on the field.”
What music do you listen to to get fired up for games?
“I am a more low-key, focused pregame player who likes to get mentally honed in and less of a hype-up energy guy. I listen to a lot of Coldplay and Jars of Clay (2000s Christian band) in my pregame. Coldplay’s A Head Full of Dreams and Ghost Stories are my go-to albums.”
Do you have any superstitions associated with your games?
“I am not very superstitious, but my pregame routine is very consistent, which allows me to have the same performance, mindset, and focus every week. I do a scripted stretching routine while listening to music, get dressed, put on wrist tape on which I write my favorite bible verse and the people I’m playing the game for, and then go out and go through a specific kickoff and field goal warmup.”
