The Philadelphia Eagles ran the famous “Tush Push” play 48 times in 2025, converting 39 of them, with an approximately 81.3% success rate. This may not seem very good, but considering the normal goal line conversion rate is about 38%, this is a lot. That is why 22 of 32 NFL teams voted to ban the tush push for the 2025-26 season. Now, this ban wasn’t even close to going through, because you need everyone other than the Eagles to agree on the ban. But that begs the question: Should the NFL full-on ban the Tush Push for the 2026-27 season? Well, here’s my thoughts…
If you’re not familiar, the Tush Push is a play where the Eagles line up with two tight ends (TEs), six linemen, one running back, and the quarterback. It almost looks like a victory formation, except they are pushing with all their might forward to get across the goal line. The picture displayed shows what this looks like. And so far, no one has been able to stop it, as the only thing that has stopped it is the eagles themselves through mistakes during the play. The Tush Push is very overpowered, but not everything is impossible to stop. Teams could probably figure out how to stop it, but they probably don’t want to go through the trouble of doing that.
Here is where I stand on the problem: I don’t think it should be fully banned, because I think the eagles deserve to use what they’ve created. BUT, I think there should be a limit to how many times they can use it during the season, because using it 48 times is absurd. One way I would limit it is by making a rule that you can only use it 20 times during the regular season and 20 times during the playoffs. This is because I feel like having a limit would maybe have them save it for more important goal-line situations instead of a 4th and 1 on their 40-yard line. Also, another thing that should be pointed out is the fact that the Tush Push isn’t even injury-prone like people have claimed. ZERO injuries happened from doing the Tush Push play. To be completely honest, I think teams are just getting salty since the Eagles won the Super Bowl, and it shows.
I will say, the Tush Push is very overpowered. And that’s why I think there should be some limits to it (especially during the playoffs). But an outright ban is very unnecessary, and it’s not like the Tush Push is what brought them to the playoffs; it was just their skill that brought them there. And like I’ve said before, nothing is impossible to stop. I believe the Tush Push will probably get banned anyway in the upcoming years, but I would strongly disagree with a ban. I don’t think it’s necessary, and I especially don’t think it hurts the game of football.
The Tush Push play is astonishing, but I will admit, it is very overused. But that’s why I would support limiting the Tush Push to 20 times during the season and 20 during the playoffs, but fully eliminating it just seems outrageous. It almost seems like the NFL is getting soft nowadays, and I hate to see it happen. I feel like everyone does, especially the coaches and players.
