Q & A with varsity volleyball player, senior Kadence Roelfzema

Name: Kadence Roelfzema

Sport: Varsity volleyball

Class: Senior

How long have you been playing volleyball?

“I’ve been around it for around eighteen years; that’s how long my mom has been coaching at FHC. I’ve been playing since fourth grade.”

Do you play any other sports at FHC?

“No, I don’t play any other sports. I play volleyball year-round.”

What is your best memory from your time playing volleyball?

“My best memory would have to be winning districts against Forest Hills Northern my sophomore year in five sets.”

What are the strengths of this year’s team?

“We all get along really well and there’s a lot of team chemistry. We all have the determination and grit to win.”

What are your individual goals for this season?

“To reach the 1500 assist milestone and to win conference and districts.”

Who is the biggest influence in your athletic career and why?

“My mom. She played at FHC in high school and played volleyball at the collegiate level. She’s been a great role model and always kept me around the sport growing up. It showed me her love and dedication to the sport and for me.”

Do you have any superstitions associated with your games?

“A lot of girls on the team have to do certain handshakes before the game. Personally, for me, I always have to be the second one lined up on the line before we start the game.”

Is there any significance behind your number?

“My birthday is on the eighth and it’s my lucky number. For all my club teams and years prior I’ve always been number eight.”

How bad is your ankle injury, and when do you think you’ll be able to play again?

“At first I couldn’t walk on it because it was really swollen and it was a bad sprain. But the trainers say I am making a lot of progress. At first, they estimated I’d be out 4-6 weeks but now they think I can get back a lot sooner than expected.”
