Competing against the Cedar Springs, the JV softball team was in the lead but one tough inning led the girls to a loss with a final score of 24-20.
In the first inning, the girls were down by 12 runs but continued to fight back against their opponent, and in the fifth inning, pushed ahead 18-16. Still, Cedar Springs scored 6 more runs while the girls only scored a total of 4. With Senior Lyra Vandenberg striking out six of the girls and her teammate Gabby Thompson hitting five for six with four singles and one double, the girls were able to stay in it.
“We are getting a lot of good hits in,” Araceli Zuñiga said. “We have to make sure we are all on the same page about what we have to do.”
During the final game of the season, junior Sydney Ashcroft tallied three RBIs and an amazing catch in left field. The girls won for the first time in the 2022 season with the final score against West Ottawa being 21-3. Coach Udell is ecstatic about the win and the hard work the girls put in throughout the season.
“I love getting to know girls and pushing them to be better people and softball players throughout the season,” coach Udell said. “When girls are encouraging each other, everyone feels better about themselves.”
Ending their season on a high note, the girls are proud of their victory along with themselves for all the progress they have made.
