Finally, the American Cornhole League is kicking off to a great start, with its first matches beginning over the span of the next three days. On the weekend of February 11, cornhole champions from all around America went against one another. When it was all said and done, Matt Guy was the last man standing. Guy acquired a total of 420 points, while runners-up Doug Zafft and Dillon Turpin had final scores of 410 and 400, respectively.
Being comfortable in the spotlight, Guy was named the American Cornhole Player of the Year after racking up three ACO major wins and six ACO regional wins during the 2012 season. As he won more awards and titles, Matt Guy was also recognized as the “King of Cornlone” in 2006. At the beginning of his career, Guy learned horseshoe and cornhole from his daughter. Matt Guy was ranked sixth in the world for horseshoe pitching.
“Then, in 2000, I was introduced to cornhole. It felt really natural to me.”
Playing both for a while, in 2004 Matt switched exclusively to cornhole. Cornhole has taken up a large portion of his life, as he had to go to Florida when his kids were younger to compete and win money. In the end, his hard work paid for the trip.
By becoming a star through his cornhole legacy, Guy has many fans who beg him for autographs and ways to document his achievements. Matt Guy went into greater detail about what his fans do and how they appreciate what he does.
“I’ve probably received 800 or so requests from people who mail my trading card to me with a letter and self-addressed envelope, asking for my autograph,” Guy said. “I originally had 500 of my cards and gave all of them away. Now I buy my own cards on eBay for $1 to $2 each because when people ask me for my autograph, I give it to them on one of my cards.”
Even though Matt Guy is a growing prodigy in the cornhole and horseshoe throwing, Matt’s favorite cornhole memory was seeing his son Bret win the world championship at age 19.
The American Cornhole Association’s slate of games will continue on March 18 and run until the twentieth. The games will resume in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and the champions will return and compete for their spots as reigning champions.
