The 2025 fall season is coming to an end for many sports. Boys soccer, football, and tennis are just some of these teams. It’s a bittersweet feeling when these sports end, but it comes with a new high note. Winter is coming, and winter sports seasons are going to start up soon enough. Basketball is one of the upcoming winter sports, and Jackson Buff, a junior this year at FHC, is ecstatic to get the season going.
“I’m excited to play with a young team and to see how much better we can get as the season goes on,” Buff stated. “Hopefully, we can do really good this year.”
Buff has been playing basketball ever since he was in elementary school, and he still loves the game even more. He wants to make this year’s varsity team, and it’s not easy. Anyone who is adamant about playing on the team needs to prepare during the offseason. Buff has been doing the best he can to do so.
“In order to prepare for the season, I’m doing lots of shooting at gyms and going to all open gyms that I can go to be the best player I can be for the team this year.”
Winter in Michigan is very cold and very white, too. Snow makes it possible for FHC and many other schools to have ski teams. Cannonsburg is FHC’s home skiing venue, and Colton Comiskey, a returning senior FHC ski member, is ready to get out on the slopes again.
“I’m really excited to grow and compete this season,” Comiskey exclaimed. “I’m a senior, and this is my last year, so I want to take everything I’ve practiced and worked for the last 3 years and make a good season out of it, and hopefully even make it to states. I’m also very excited to spend time on the slopes with my teammates and some of my best friends, making memories at practices and on trips.”
Skiing has such a big offseason, so staying in shape and being ready for the next season is difficult. However, for Comiskey, it’s a breeze as he is a varsity FHC soccer player and a varsity golfer.
“To get ready for the season, I’ve been focusing on improving myself physically and getting into the shape I need to be in to dominate,” Comiskey said. “I play soccer and golf too, so those conditions help a lot. As there isn’t snow yet on the ground, there’s not much I can do technique-wise for skiing, so I’ve been putting in work at the gym, lifting weights and training plyometrics, so my body is completely ready for when we can finally get on snow.”
One of the sports that might not get enough appreciation is bowling, and it, too, is a winter sport. This winter sport is growing in popularity at FHC, and this season, Jasker Bently plans on bringing heat to the lanes.
“For this season, I’m excited to see how my teammates have progressed in the off-season and how we work this year as a team.”
Bowling really has no offseason as it is an indoor sport, but one still has to keep up his or her game to be prepared for the next season. Bowling is Bentley’s favorite sport, and he wants to stay fresh for this year’s tryouts.
“To prepare for this season, I am constantly going to the bowling alley to work on my form,” Bentley said. “I also practice different situations that might occur during the actual season.”
Another sport that is starting up at FHC during this winter season is boys swim and dive. It’s an indoor sport, and senior Christian Afman is getting ready to jump in.
“I’m excited for the opportunity to get better and faster, as well as the opportunity to beat my rivals and teammates.”
Swimming is known to be one of the toughest sports out there as it works out the majority of muscles in the body. Intense conditioning is almost required to be ready to swim, and Afman is ready.
“I’m preparing by doing a lot of conditioning in the gym and practicing in my off time to hopefully get myself better. I really want to try to do better this year.”
Frigid temperatures are near, but the FHC winter sports teams are heating up and are on the verge of providing fans guaranteed memorable moments.
