Rugby starts out the season with a tough loss to Kentwood RC

A new season begins for Forest Hills RC, as it looks to begin 2022 with a bang. Forest Hills Rugby Club is a combination of athletes from both Forest Hills Northern and Forest Hills Central, led by the head coach of the FHC wrestling team, Brad Andreson. Coach Andreson recently took over the reins as head coach of the club and continues to look to build a connection between the schools of Forest Hills as he tries to unite boys on the pitch.

The squad is headlined by seniors Cam DeWitt, Cole Feyen, Evan Elzinga, Sheldon Ramsey, Stevie Wolf, and Charley Radke. The youth on this team runs deep, as the team contains members from the junior class such as Topher Beckering, Andrew Weiskopf, Anthony Ott, Evan Lubben, Luke Piotrowski, and sophomores such as Ryan Sutherlund and Josh Elzinga.

In their first game against Kentwood RC, the boys were able to build on the offense in small amounts but took advantage of conversions. Topher was able to get the only points on the board for FH after he drilled the conversion kick to help cut down the Jenison victory to a final score of 31-3. Although the team did not achieve a victory in their first game, the players remain optimistic for the future of their short regular season.

“We look forward to seeing how our new plays will work,” Andrew said, “As forwards, we’re looking to see how we’d play as a smaller team against some of the bigger players.”

The squad is now 0-1 on the season but will have a chance to even out its record next Friday against Portage Central.
