Girls varsity soccer loses a close match in season-opener against Gull Lake

When it finally reached the time to open up the new season, RGSO was back in action with an away match-up against Gull Lake. After having a very successful season the year prior, FHC’s girls varsity soccer was looking to open the year up with a big win against the Blue Devils.

The senior class showcased strong defense as it slowed down Gull Lake on transition all night; senior Ava Wilberding played a spectacular night in the net. On the offensive end, senior Lauren Koczenasz scored the lone goal for the Rangers and tied the game in the second half at 1-1.

Late in the game, Gull Lake got a free-kick opportunity and took advantage of it to score the game-winning goal by a score of 2-1. The girls played a very tight game throughout but fell just short on a late defensive breakdown.

The Rangers are 0-1 on the season and now are moving on to a game against Caledonia on Friday, March 25. FHC is looking to grow on the offensive end in the next game to help assist an already-solid defensive core.

“The more practice time we get as a team, the more we will learn about each other and the type of runs one another makes,” Ava Wilberding said. “We are focusing on possessing the ball and moving it forward into our attack to get a solid look and chances on goal.”
