A balanced attack lifts boys JV soccer over Northview 4-0

Heading into Tuesday’s game against Northview, the Rangers felt that they had not played a perfectly balanced game yet. They had a few games with offensive breakthroughs or defensive shutdowns, but other than that, they never put the pieces together to play well on both sides of the ball. However, that would change when the Rangers faced the Wildcats.

FHC came into the rivalry game with laser focus, and it showed early. FHC won all the loose ball battles and continuously stole passes, which led to offensive opportunities. Capitalization on those offensive opportunities was vital, and the first one was a goal from sophomore Chris Dongmo and assisted by fellow sophomore Charlie Afman. FHC gained momentum right after that goal, leading to most of the half being played on the offensive side. A second goal occurred when freshman Dylan Buchanan assisted Charlie Afman to increase FHC’s lead to two goals. The defense was not called upon very much in the first half but played well when needed. In the second half, FHC continued to dominate on both sides of the field. Sophomore Jacob Robertson took it upon himself and scored the third goal of the game, making the score 3-0. FHC added onto its dominant performance when sophomore Jackson Savin placed a beautiful ball into the breadbasket of sophomore Matthew Taylor. After he received the pass, Matthew booted it in to put the Rangers up by four goals. Northview had more chances in the second half to score, but FHC would not let up. A balanced attack from the Rangers resulted in a 4-0 win.

“I’m proud of our team’s effort and execution,” head coach Robert Otterbein said. “It was our first complete game in terms of offensive and defensive effort for the entire game.”

The Rangers improve to 5-3 on the year after a great showing versus the Wildcats. FHC will take on the Byron Center Bulldogs this Thursday at Ranger Stadium.
