JV soccer squeaks past its biggest rival East Grand Rapids 2-1

The clock was ticking down as the fourth quarter came to a close, and FHC faced a 1-1 stalemate against East Grand Rapids. Then, sophomore Chris Dongmo got an opportunity to score. He received the pass as time dwindled away and let off a late shot towards the net.

Heading into the game, the JV soccer team stood at a 3-3 record. FHC traveled to Memorial Stadium to take on the Pioneers of East Grand Rapids. EGR has been a formidable team in the past few years for the Rangers. The start of the game was slow which meant the defense had to step up. Defensive pressure and clogging up the passing lanes were key adjustments that FHC made early in the game, which would pay off later in the game. EGR and FHC traded goals in the first half, making the score 1-1. Freshman Dylan Buchanan scored the first goal and gave the Rangers a dubious amount of momentum heading to the second half. In the second half, the defensive battle elevated. EGR maintained possession of the ball for most of the half, but the Rangers did not allow a goal. Towards the end of the game, FHC had possession and looked to get a potential scoring chance. The team passed it around, and Chris received the ball. After booting the ball towards the net, Chirs’s shot torpedoes into the back of the net—victory for FHC.

FHC improves to 4-3 on the season after a few game cancellations. The Rangers take on the Northview Wildcats next Tuesday and look to continue winning against their conference opponents.

“We have to continue playing our A-game,” sophomore Jackson Savin said. “It’s another rivalry game, so we have to be locked in.”
