Just two days after spring break, the Forest Hills girls varsity water polo team got off to a fast start against Grand Ledge. After dropping two consecutive games in the East Kentwood Quad, the girls dove in headfirst to dismantle Grand Ledge on both sides of the ball. The game started with a quick 5-1 run for FH after the end of the first quarter. Shortly after the first, Forest Hills started to slow down but took an 8-6 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Grand Ledge inched back and kept the game tight. Bringing the score to 10-9 in the third, Grand Ledge would go on to tie the game at 11. In the end, Forest Hills ran away with the game after two quick goals, winning the game by a score of 13-11.
The leadership of senior Rachel Schenck tipped the iceberg in favor of FH once again. Rachel is a multi-sport athlete from FHC who has competed in both Wrestling and Swimming this past year. Head coach Sara Fredricks has been very appreciative of the guidance Rachel brings.
“Rachel’s leadership this year is huge. Not having a season last year has been hard on our team, but she instantly stepped up to be a leader. She’s one of our only returning varsity players and one of three seniors, so she’s constantly looked at for support and advice from her teammates,” coach Fredricks said. “Rachel is very reliable and consistently leads by example, both in and out of the pool. Her leadership has been helping the girls who missed out on a year of playing at the JV level to be varsity level players and keep our team competitive. She’s already proved that she’s going to be a key player for our team this year for both her skill level and leadership. We’re very lucky to have Rachel as a senior captain.”
Forest Hills is now 1-2 on the season and will finish off this week with two more matches. First, the girls will host East Grand Rapids for their last home game of the week on Thursday, April 15th. Wrapping up the week on Saturday, April 17th, the team will travel to its first district seeding games of the year.
