Over the past few years, flag football has seen an increase in popularity, with about 2.4 million kids under 17 playing organized flag football in the US. Is this increase in popularity and participation going to take over normal tackle football, and how will it affect the NFL?
A big reason for this increase in popularity is the increase in awareness of CTE and other contact-related injuries. This is making parents more careful and think more before letting their kids participate in football and other heavy-contact sports. A 2024 study on youth athletes found that 73.2% of parents considered the possibility of their child sustaining a concussion to be upsetting, and 61.5% were fearful of it. Flag football is the middle ground between kids who want to play football and parents who don’t want to risk their kid getting injured.
Another reason is just the NFL promoting it. More recently, the NFL hosted a flag football showcase in Saudi Arabia with Tom Brady. The NFL might want to do this because of the possibility of getting more parents to let their kids play football, because it has significantly less contact than regular tackle football. And in turn, getting more people to fall in love with football and watch more.
The smaller learning and entrance curve of flag football is also a reason that it is gaining popularity. More people who wouldn’t see themselves ever playing football are getting into the game with the lower learning curve and physical demand of flag football. And flag football focuses more on cardio and speed, which more people would most likely prefer over the focus on muscle for regular tackle football.
I don’t think that the NFL will switch to flag football any time soon, unless CTE and its effects become more widespread or there are restrictions placed on it; however, I think it will mainly take over for youth football (anything below high school) because parents are more worried about head injuries now. The NFL’s whole thing is big hits and plays, and I feel like they would lose a lot of money if they switched to flag.
Overall, with the growth of the sport, the NFL is buying into it and promoting it, but how will it affect them? In my opinion, it will be good for the NFL because it will bring more players into the game, in the US, and in other countries, which they can more easily expand with flag football, as we can see in Saudi Arabia. They see this benefit, and that is why they are trying to expand it, like how the Pro Bowl has been flag since 2023. There may be other reasons that they are trying to grow this sport, but the most likely explanation is that they see a positive effect for the NFL.
