Varsity wrestling win streak snaps with 1-2 record at Caledonia

The Rangers competed in their seventh quad this season against Caledonia, Jenison, and Reeths-Puffer. All three opponents were non-conference opponents, therefore the team didn’t know much about what to expect from their competition.

The boys’ first dual was against the Caledonia Fighting Scots. The team split duals with Caledonia last year going 1-1; they knew the level they had to compete at to be victorious. Senior leader Caden Jacobs continued his dominating season as he picked up another win on the season and helped the team gain a substantial lead. The Rangers ended up beating the Fighting Scotts 42-27, but the two will have a rematch this upcoming weekend.

Following a thrilling win, the Rangers competed against an extremely talented Reeths-Puffer team. Coming into the dual, the Rockets were ranked an impressive number eight in the state. The Rangers knew they had a daunting task ahead of them, but seniors Caden Jacobs and Isaac Gurley were able to gain important wins for the team throughout the match. Although the boys fought back and forth, they ended up falling short 41-33 to the Reeths Puffer Rockets.

For the final match of the day, the team battled against Jenison. The two teams were locked into a dog fight with back and forth lead changes throughout the entire dual. Due to an error in the weight sheet, senior Isaac Gurley’s wins on the day did not count for the team, henceforth leaving the Rangers with a 37-34 loss.

Following this quad, the Rangers’ record now goes to 12-4 on their season. The boys have their final quad of the regular season this upcoming Saturday at Caledonia again at 3:30 PM.
