Boys varsity wrestling continues hot streak with seventh win in a row

This past weekend, the Rangers competed in a tough, out-of-conference quad at Grand Haven High School. The boys competed against Grand Haven, Holland, and Zeeland West. Following the dominant win against Kenowa Hills, the Rangers had high expectations to win with their success in recent weeks.

The team competed against Grand Haven in their first dual of the day; the match was close all the way up to the end. Seniors Bryce Hysong and Isaac Gurley had huge wins for the team and also had an impressive day individually. The Rangers and Buccaneers were the best match of the day as each team had a whole lineup with talented wrestlers at every weight class. The dual came down to the final match, with the Rangers winning 36-34. Senior captain Caden Jacobs was the final match of the dual. As the senior leader has shown all season, Caden is one of the team’s best wrestlers. With his record sitting at 15-0, Caden managed to impressively major his opponent, and the Rangers were able to beat Grand Haven 40-34.

The boys faced off against Holland following their narrow victory earlier in the day. Freshman Greyson Ripmaster also played a big part in the team’s success as he finished the day at 3-0 with an impressive win during the Holland dual. Senior Mason Childers also had one of the best matches of the day as he faced off against the 14th best wrestler in Michigan at the 130-pound weight division. Mason battled back and forth throughout all three periods; as the match came to an end, Mason was victorious 7-6. That was a big momentum swing for the Rangers as they were able to beat Holland 42-32.

For the team’s final match of the day, the Rangers competed against Zeeland West. As the boys came off two impressive wins, their final match seemed effortless as they toppled Zeeland West 78-6. The team almost had a flawless victory, winning every weight division with a collage of wrestlers going undefeated on the weekend which helped the Rangers tremendously. Seniors Caden Jacobs, Isaac Gurley, Mason Childers, and Bryce Hysong all had an impressive 3-0 showing.

Following their most recent quad, the team’s record now stands at 11-4 on the regular season and 4-4 in conference play. The Rangers’ next quad will be at Caledonia on Wednesday, March 10th, battling against Caledonia, Jenison, and Reeths-Puffer.
