Ski team comes out of the gate with ferocity at its first meet

Led by first-year head coach Sara Yockey-Sutton, the FHC ski team kicked off its season at Cannonsburg this Tuesday. With a particularly late start to this season, FHC entered the event with only two practices under its belt and still prevailed.

In the men’s giant slalom race, senior captain Ben Taylor took an impressive fifth place with a combined time of 55.8 seconds. Following Ben was sophomore Mickey Mehney placing 12th with a time of 59.4 seconds and junior Christian Bethea with 59.48 seconds.

The slalom race had similar results, with Ben again placing fifth with a combined time of one minute and 7.22 seconds. Christian held 9th with 1 minute and 10.97 seconds with Mickey closing behind at 10th with 1 minute and 12.14 seconds.

The women’s giant slalom race was led by junior Ally Werkema in 19th place with a combined time of 1 minute and 0.83 seconds. Molly O’Meara clocked in with 1 minute and 5.28 seconds, securing 26th. Maya Sneider was a close 27th with 1 minute and 6.33 seconds.

In the women’s slalom race, Ally held down 11th place for FHC with a combined time of 1 minute and 20.83 seconds. Lilly Harsevoort pulled through with a 1 minute, 29.71 second-time for 13th, and Maya came back to secure 14th with a 1 minute and 33.89 second run.

With a mixture of senior leadership and fresh talent, the FHC ski team is up to any challenge.

“Everybody had a good time and the team was really positive despite the end results and lack of practice leading up to it,” Ben Taylor said. “There’s definitely a lot of room to grow and improve for everyone on the team but I can’t wait to see the progress over the next few weeks and I think we’ll end up in pretty good shape by the end of the season”.

Make sure to head out to Cannonsburg next Tuesday, January 25, to watch the Rangers participate in their next meet.
