Varsity softball dominates in districts versus East Grand Rapids and wins 21-4
Heading into its first playoff game of the season, the varsity softball team brewed some momentum after beating Catholic Central. The girls faced a familiar opponent in East Grand Rapids in their first game of districts. FHC blew out the Pioneers in multiple games earlier in the season, winning 16-1 and 21-7. A similar result occurred in this game, as the Rangers topped the Pioneers. They won 21-4, with key performances from senior Kylie Halverson and senior Bela Gonzalez.
FHC got off to a fast start, and EGR could not recover. The girls had an electric performance at the plate, with Kylie leading the game in hits with three. Senior Abby Davis also had a phenomenal day at the plate with 2 hits and 3 RBIs. Other big-time performers such as freshman Lacey Smith and junior Alyssa Wierenga had lasting impacts at the plate. Lacey scored four times and had 3 RBIs, while Alyssa had two hits and 2 RBIs. On the mound, Bela did not disappoint. Bela had four strikeouts in a complete game, a WHIP of 1.33, and gave up four runs on five hits. A complete game ensures the Rangers another playoff game.
FHC moves to a 15-19 overall record. The girls look to continue their hot streak against the Wyoming Wolves on Saturday. Then, in a highly anticipated matchup, the winner heads to the district championship.
