Varsity softball ends its regular season with two sizeable wins against Grand Rapids Catholic Central
Heading into its game versus Catholic Central, the varsity softball team was on a nine-game losing streak. The team had been close in those games and was a few adjustments away from winning. In Thursday’s game, it was evident that the team made those adjustments. FHC dominated the cougars, winning 11-1 and 24-12. The Rangers dominated CC in every aspect of the game and just straight up outplayed them.
In the first game, the girls came out ready and focused. FHC was led by senior Bela Gonzalez, who pitched most of the game. In five innings, she struck five batters out, had an FPS of 15, and a WHIP of 1.60. Senior Faith Addington finished the game and had a WHIP of 1.00 as well. The great pitching sparked a frenzy of Ranger hits. They would score a run in every inning, proving to be too much for the Cougar pitching corps. Sophomore Maya Holser was 2-4 from the plate with 4 RBIs. Junior Alyssa Wierenga also had 2 hits with 2 RBIs, and sophomore Lauren Halverson was 3-3 with 3 runs in her varsity debut.
The second game was a much different game than the first. It was a tightly contested battle through five innings when Catholic Central was up 11-9. Then, in the sixth inning, the Rangers sprung open the game with a 15-run inning. Senior Kylie Halverson led the way with 2 hits and 3 RBIs, including an inside-the-park home run. Maya added 2 hits and 7 RBIs with a grand slam.
Varsity softball moves to 14-19 on the season, staying at a 10-7 conference record. The team heads into the postseason confident and much improved. Their opponent is still to be decided.
