Varsity softball drops its doubleheader to a 31-3 Calvin Christian team
After a tough loss versus Byron Center, the varsity softball team looked to bounce back. The Rangers faced a tough Calvin Christian team that is one of the top teams in the state. The girls struggled in the first game, losing 9-0. FHC took the loss personally and played a fantastic second game. After giving their best effort, the girls fell to the Crusaders 12-5 in a tough loss.
In the first game, the Rangers fell into a drought of hitting the ball. They struggled to make contact against a very talented Calvin Christian team, recording only five hits. The defense played well for the first five innings, only giving up four runs. FHC ran out of gas in the fifth, letting up four more runs. Senior Faith Addington pitched a great game, only giving up four total runs, striking out two batters, and possessing a WHIP of 1.86.
The second game was a change of pace for the Rangers. Senior Kylie Halverson had a copious impact, going 3-4 at the plate. Alyssa Wierenga also had an impressive performance at the plate with two hits. FHC fell down six runs in the second inning off of three errors; however, freshman Lacey Smith came in for relief and brought a spark to the Rangers’ defense. It was not enough to bring FHC back, but it gave confidence to the team.
The girls downgrade to 12-19 and their conference record remains the same at 10-7. FHC faces West Ottawa on Wednesday, May 26. With a few wins to end the season, FHC could potentially grab some heavy momentum heading into the postseason.
