Varsity softball struggles versus powerhouse Byron Center and loses 13-1
The varsity softball team knew that Byron Center would be its toughest opponent of the season heading into Monday’s game. Byron Center has multiple Division 1 players, and they’re the top team in the OK White conference. The Bulldogs’ firepower showed when they beat FHC 13-1. Byron Center’s pitcher, Maddie Gkekas, a Division 1 Ferris State commit, led the attack for the Bulldogs.
FHC struggled to hit from the get-go; they only had a handful of hits but had a bright spot in the fourth inning. Heading into the fourth, Byron had a perfect game going until junior Alyssa Wierenga hit a single to end the skid. Then sophomore Maya Holser hit a double and knocked Alyssa in. On the mound, senior Faith Addington pitched for FHC. Thrown into a tough spot, she threw as hard as she could, striking out three batters and notching a WHIP of 3.00.
FHC’s record is now 11-14, with a conference record of 9-4. The Rangers look for revenge against the Bulldogs on Wednesday, May 19. If FHC wins, they can create a spark of confidence for the playoffs.
