Varsity softball runs out of gas in doubleheader versus Zeeland West and loses 5-0 and 10-0
After beating Kenowa Hills on Thursday, the varsity softball team improved to 5-0 during the week. However, they still had two more games to play last weekend. FHC would take on a tough Zeeland West team in its seventh game in five days. The fatigue of playing that many games in such a short span seemed to get to the girls; they were defeated 5-0 and 10-0. Senior Bela Gonzalez starred in the first game, as she pitched arguably her best game of the season.
In the first game, the Rangers struggled to get on base. They only had 5 hits which led to zero runs. One bright spot from this game was the pitching performances. Bela pitched the first game, and she had a phenomenal performance. She pitched seven innings, striking out eight batters, and had a WHIP of 1.57. The second game was much more of a struggle than the first. FHC only had two hits which came from senior Kylie Halverson and freshman Lacey Smith. Zeeland West’s pitcher only gave up 2 hits and zero runs, showing why she’s one of the best pitchers in the area. On the mound, senior Faith Addington pitched four innings. In those four innings pitched, she struck out three batters and notched a WHIP of 3.00.
FHC moves to 11-13 after the two losses and has a conference record of 9-3. The girls look to sharpen up against their biggest competition of the season: Byron Center. They travel to play the Bulldogs on Tuesday, May 18, at Byron Center.
