Varsity softball loses tough doubleheader against Mona Shores despite key performances from Faith Addington and Kylie Halverson
Heading into the Mona Shores game, the varsity softball team was on a three-game winning streak. The girls seemed as if they found their stride after an impressive batting performance against East Grand Rapids. However, Mona Shores posed a different challenge to the Rangers. It was a tightly contested battle in the first game, but Mona pulled away at the end, winning 8-6. Senior Faith Addington and senior Abby Davis had impressive games. In the second game, the girls continued to struggle. Even though Faith and senior Kylie Halverson had big impacts on the game, FHC’s struggles led to a 5-15 collapse.
The first game was a dog fight for the Lady Rangers; it was a competitive game going into the fifth inning. Unfortunately for FHC, Mona had a big fifth inning, which led to the Ranger’s demise. Abby had a great first game by hitting the ball two times and notching two RBIs. Freshman Lacey Smith also had two hits. Despite the loss, Faith had a stellar performance on the mound. She pitched six innings and gave up only one run while striking out three batters. Costly errors were a factor in the big fifth inning for Mona, which ultimately won them the game. The second game was a totally different outcome. FHC hit the ball well; however, Mona’s fielding ability was evidently elite as they made play after play. Again, Abby led the team in hits with three. Kylie also had two hits along with two RBIs. Lacey pitched just over an inning, and Faith pitched four innings. Faith had four strikeouts in this game.
The Rangers move to 6-11 with a 6-3 conference record. They face off against the Wildcats of Northview on Monday, May 10, at Northview. FHC looks to get back on track in its quest to compete for a conference title.
