Varsity softball has a dominating performance versus rival East Grand Rapids
After back-to-back losses versus Zeeland West, the varsity softball team looked to bounce back against East Grand Rapids this past Monday. East Grand Rapids is not an easy opponent to beat, but the girls looked to elevate their abilities and develop during the heat of battle. And they did just that. They won by mercy in back-to-back games, winning 16-1 in the first game and 21-6 in the second. Senior Kylie Halverson had a stunning first game, and senior Faith Addington starred in the second game.
The first game was a blowout from the beginning; FHC got off to a fast start and never looked back. Kylie had a big game with two inside-the-park home runs. Sophomore Maya Holser also had a home run that went over the scoreboard at her first at-bat. Complementing the offensive firepower, Faith pitched in this game and shut down the Pioneer batting attack.
The second game got off to a different start. FHC struggled to field the ball, which gave EGR a spark of confidence. Freshman Lacey Smith pitched well, but EGR got a few hits off her. Heading into the fourth inning, the score was tied at six apiece. FHC would go on to score over ten runs in that inning. This onslaught led to a mercy. Faith closed out the game on the mound and hit an inside-the-park home run. Senior Leanna Clark also had a key triple to clear all the bases.
The girls move to 5-9 on the season with a 5-3 conference record. They face off against East Grand Rapids once again on Wednesday, May 5.
