Varsity softball hits a roadblock and loses to Zeeland East in a doubleheader
The varsity softball team was on a roll heading into the doubleheader against Zeeland East. After winning three straight against Grand Rapids Christian, they heated up but faced a better team in Zeeland East. In the first game, it was a battle but FHC could not prevail. The Chix would defeat the Rangers 14-9, with senior Kylie Halverson and junior Alyssa Wierenga having huge games at the plate. The second game was much different. Zeeland East got hot at the plate and won 13-5. Freshman Jamison Sturtz and Alyssa Wierenga gave lifts to a struggling hitting attack.
FHC battled to stay close in the first game. Kylie Halverson had a career game, going 3-3 from the plate with two home runs. One was an out-of-the-park homer, while the other stayed inside the yard. Alyssa Wierenga helped the cause by going 4-5 at the plate, with senior Bela Gonzalez also scoring twice. The girls were up 7-6 heading into the sixth, but after a big inning from the Chix, the girls faced a deficit and could not overcome it; they would lose 14-9. In the second game, the girls struggled to hit the ball. Zeeland took advantage of this and created a huge lead. Jamison Sturtz had a big second game, going 3-3 with two RBI’s. Alyssa Wierenga also helped the cause by going 2-4 and scoring twice. The girls would fall in this game as well, losing 13-5.
Varsity softball moves to 3-9 on the season with a 3-3 conference record. The team looks to bounce back against East Grand Rapids this Monday, May 3rd at home.
