The varsity softball team was 0-7 coming into its game versus Grand Rapids Christian on Monday, but it seemed as if the girls started to figure it out during their doubleheader versus South Christian last Friday. They held a solid lead in the first game but fell apart and lost by one run. In the second game, they dominated the plate with 11 runs. However, their lack of defense came back to bite them. In the end, they gave up 19 runs. This small shift in momentum was seen in their performance against Grand Rapids Christian as well. The first game was a defensive battle sprinkled with an offensive spark. They won 12-2, with senior Faith Addington and sophomore Maya Holser contributing largely. After their first win of the season, the Rangers used the built-up momentum and had a big second game. FHC dominated the plate in the second game, winning 14-4. Key players from that game were freshman Jamison Sturtz, junior Remmie Gavle, and freshman Lea Zainea. 

In the first game, the Rangers dominated the diamond and fielded the ball cleanly; they only gave up one error, which is why they held the Eagles to two runs. Faith’s stalwart performance on the mound was the main reason for that, as she only gave up two runs on four hits while striking out nine batters. Maya Holser had a standout game in the batter’s box, going 2-3 with three RBIs. The second game was a similar result. Jamison, Lea, and Alyssa Wierenga all had three hits to lead the team. Remmie stepped up, driving in three runs. Maya Holser also scored three times. Jamison started on the mound and did a great job of controlling the game with her decisive pitching; she pitched a complete game while striking out five hitters.

FHC moves to 2-7 on the season with a 2-3 conference record. The Rangers need to prepare for battle quickly, as they play Grand Rapids Christian again on Wednesday, April 28. Once the Eagles are out of the way, FHC is forced to travel out to Zeeland to face Zeeland East the following day. If the Rangers win this one, they will have a ton of momentum heading into the coveted East Grand Rapids series next Monday.
