Without sufficient time to rest and recuperate, the boys varsity golf squad made the trip out to Kent Country Club to compete in the OK White Jamboree nine-hole tournament. The dangerous tandem of junior sensation Joe Murdock and senior phenom Cam David paved the way for a third-place finish behind FHC’s two bitter rivals in East Grand Rapids and Forest Hills Northern.

“I played a decent round today and hit a couple of big putts that kept my score as low as possible,” Cam said when asked to analyze his seventh-place finish and score of 41. “I wasn’t pleased with my performance in the last tournament, so I obviously came out with a different attitude this time.”

Along with Cam, Joe heavily contributed to the Ranger birdiemen and their final score of 204. In yesterday’s disappointing outing, Joe noted that he should have and could have finished in first. Making sure his execution on the fairway did most of the talking, Joe edged out Forest Hills Northern’s Jack Zubkus by two strokes to take home the hardware. Joe’s 36 on the day speaks volumes to just how far he has come from being the sole freshman on the team in 2018 to becoming a veteran that younger players can emulate on the course.

“As one of the older guys on the team, I want to be a guy who can let his play do the talking and also speak up when I need to,” Joe said. “The team seems more comfortable after the first tournament which is important with having two freshmen on the team.”

Going off of the theme of progression, the boys have one more tournament this week to use as a stepping stool for future matches and tournaments. Their final tournament of the week will take place on Wednesday, April 14th at Thornapple Pointe golf course. Compared to the two other tournaments this season, the Kent County Championships brings together a whopping 29 other West Michigan golfing programs and should definitely test the Ranger’s inner strength as a team.

“We played with nice confidence in the OK White Jamboree, but we need to get more consistent as a whole” head coach Paul TenEyck said. “The Kent County Championships should be a perfect way to see where we are right now and where we need to be.”
