Name: Kylin Roelfzema
Sport: Volleyball
Grade: Junior
How long have you been playing?
“I have grown up in the gym all my life—my mom has been a coach for as long as I can remember, and my sister also played volleyball. Although I was always around it, I actually started playing in 7th grade.”
What other sports do you play at FHC?
“I don’t play any other sports at FHC, but I do club volleyball in the winter through spring at MVA.”
What is your best memory from your time playing?
“My best memory was during my 8th-grade club season when we traveled to Detroit for a tournament. I got to stay in a hotel with all my teammates—we hung out in the pool, played games, and talked until our parents yelled at us to go to bed. That year, I made so many of my best friends.”
What are the strengths of this year’s team?
“I’d say our biggest strength is the community we’ve built. Everyone on the team is friends, so we play well together and trust one another. That connection brings a lot of energy to the court, which helps us perform better.”
What are your individual goals for this season?
“My individual goals are to grow as a player overall and to get 1% better every day. No matter what role I’m placed in, I want to give it my best effort and contribute in any way I can.”
Who is the biggest influence in your athletic career and why?
“My biggest influence is definitely my mom. She’s been coaching at FHC for as long as I can remember and has always supported me. Even though I started playing a little later than some, she’s helped me grow a lot in the sport—both as a coach and a role model.”
What music do you listen to to get fired up for games?
“In the locker room, it’s a tradition to blast ‘Gang Gang’ to get hyped before game days. On the way to games, I usually listen to upbeat songs or songs from my childhood that I know all the words to.”
Who is your favorite professional athlete?
“My favorite professional athlete is Lexi Rodriguez. She played libero at Nebraska—currently the #1 ranked D1 volleyball program—and helped lead them to multiple championship games. As of last year, she’s gone pro, and it’s been inspiring to watch her journey.”
