This past Tuesday the Central JV girls’ basketball team faced off for their second game of the year versus the Grandville Bulldogs, trying to add to their 1-0 record. The first few games of the season can be difficult for all teams to see who deserves the starting spots and what key roles players will get. It can be essential for JV games because it will show whether the freshmen who are pulled up are ready for what the JV setting is like.
When watching this game, the freshman stepped up to the plate. Freshman guards Kate Fielder and Alivia Offer stepped up to the task. In the first half of the first quarter, it was pretty quiet on both sides for scoring but then the Rangers went on a 15-0 scoring run ending the first quarter with the score 15-5 with FHC up. But then the second quarter was a little shakier.
“In the second quarter our offense wasn’t executing too well, and we couldn’t get any passes in and we had a lot of turnovers,” said sophomore Ryan Palmer.
The Bulldog’s defense was difficult to get around because they would switch between man-to-man defense and a two-three zone.
“You couldn’t get the ball into the post because they would have two people double the post or the guard,” said sophomore Addison McConnell. That way of defense ended up causing the Rangers a lot of turnovers.
“In the third quarter we were very tired, so they scored most of their points in transition,” said Palmer. Once the fourth quarter came around Central’s JV team had some catching up to do, being down ten they had to push to the last seconds to try and get the win. Ultimately, FHC’s girls’ basketball team fell short of Grandville with the final score of 39-28.
