The freshman Volleyball team had their first official non-tournament game this past Tuesday.
They played their first of many conference games versus Grand Rapids Christian. The first set was very close after a few hard-fought rallies. Ryan Davis had a huge role in this set, gaining lots of points for the Rangers, one of which was an ace. There were a few unforced errors made by the Rangers at the beginning of the set that put them behind at the start, but they came back and tied it up at 21-21. But in some close calls and Grand Rapids Christian arguing with the referees, GRC won the first set 25 to 23.
Going into the 2nd set, the Rangers went up quickly, but the Eagles quickly tied it back up around halfway through the set. But even with many timeouts by GRC, the Rangers fought through, winning the 2nd set 24-19 and forcing the game into a 3rd set.
“We were trying to focus on having perfect passes, and for hitters, we wanted to make sure we had our elbow back and then snap the wrist on the ball because we were missing a lot of passes and hits. But we just wanted to have fun; we were happy with the second set,” said Brooke Cullinane, a defensive specialist for the Freshman volleyball team.
The 3rd set started a lot like the 1st, with GRC getting up fast at the start and the Rangers having to fight back, but in the end, the Rangers didn’t have enough time to come back because in the 3rd set, you only play to 15. The Rangers lost a close one,10-15, in the 3rd and final set.
Even though it was a loss for the freshman volleyball team, Coach Claire still had a lot of positive feedback.
“We played a scrappy game that, although we didn’t win, helped us put up a really good fight.”
