Name: Claire Marvin
Grade: Senior
Sport: Girls varsity basketball
How long have you been playing basketball?
“I have been playing basketball since second grade.”
What other sports do you play at FHC?
“This year, I did cross country and plan on doing something in the spring, but I am not sure what yet. In the past, I have done lacrosse and golf.”
What is your best memory from your time playing basketball and why?
“My best memory of playing basketball is from my club team sophomore year. Maggie Kelderman and I were on the same team and have played together for years. This particular memory was us winning the Mother’s Day tournament—it was such a fun moment as our team had been in either the semi-finals or the final of every tournament until that point, so finally winning one was very satisfying.”
What are the strengths of this year’s team?
“One of our biggest strengths is our team chemistry. The team gets along very well and that makes practices fun and games more fluid. We are all friends off of the court, which makes playing basketball together much easier. We are also an extremely hard-working team. Every single girl is willing to give 100% all of the time, no matter if it is a game, practice, or even running sprints.”
What are your individual goals for this season?
“My individual goal for this season is to have over a 70% free throw percentage in game. Free throws are very important to basketball and can be the difference when it comes down to that. They have always been something I struggle with because I couldn’t stick to a routine, but this year I hope to change that.”
Do you have any superstitions associated with your games?
“I don’t have any consistent superstitions that I uphold, but I do feel like I play better when I have a braid in my hair.”
What is your favorite class this year and why?
“My favorite class this year is Teacher Cadet. I originally took the class because I thought it sounded more fun than sitting in a high school class for another hour a day, but found that I actually can see myself becoming a teacher. I would have never even considered that as a career path before taking the class. I help in a kindergarten class, and I think it is super fun to interact with the kids. It is also fascinating to watch how they have grown throughout the semester—at the beginning of the year, they could not even recognize their own names, and now they can read simple phrases.”
Who is the biggest influence in your athletic career and why?
“My biggest influence is my family. Both of my parents have placed a heavy emphasis on athletics with both me and my brother for my whole life. Not necessarily pressure to succeed, but to get myself out there and active. I run with my mom a lot—and that is what inspired me to do cross country. Both of my parents played sports in high school and are still highly active now, so playing sports is just kind of a given in my family.”
