Breakdown of the top five contenders for the NFLs first overall pick

The NFL has seen some pretty bad games so far. As Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady said, “I think there’s a lot of bad football from what I watch.” This is definitely true if you have been watching  all the Thursday night games on Primetime, or if you are watching any Denver Broncos game.

For your reading entertainment, I provide you with a list of some of the worst of the worst when it comes to football. From horrible coaching to missed field goals, here are some of those teams that may be in line for “winning” a chance for the #1 overall pick in next year’s NFL Draft:

#5 – The Detroit Lions

Yes…I was the one who wrote that article to start the year.

The Detroit Lions have one of the worst defenses in the NFL. Up until their previous game against the Packers, they gave up at least 25 points to all of their opponents they had faced previously.

The offense, while they have done somewhat well, has faced bad injuries, including D’Andre Swift and Amon-Ra St. Brown. It’s also the reason why 1st round pick Jameson Williams hasn’t played a snap yet.

Jared Goff, while he isn’t awful, he is not the future for the Lions quarterback room that was passed on to him by Matthew Stafford, whom the Lions traded in 2021.

Even though the team has been a let down, a team doesn’t turn things around in one offseason; they will return to relevance soon, but this year will be another painful one.

#4 – The Las Vegas Raiders

So much for that Josh McDaniels hire, huh?

Since he was hired after the 2021 season came to a close, the Raiders have blown three different 17-point leads so far this season.

Many of their players are opting out of their contracts or are requesting trades to different teams. In fact, they just released first round safety Jonathan Adams, who just signed with the Packers.

The Raiders are one of the most disappointing teams so far this season as they made the playoffs the previous season following the controversies that surrounded them pertaining to former head coach Jon Gruden.

Unlike other teams, this Raiders organization has done nothing to prove that it is a playoff contender and has lost against teams such as the Jacksonville Jaguars, and were even shut out by the Brees-less New Orleans Saints.

#3 – The Pittsburgh Steelers

Ever since Big Ben retired, this team just seems to never stop falling into the pit of doom, otherwise known as a rebuild.

Mitch Trubisky and Kenny Pickett are possibly are close to being the worst quarterback duos in the league. Pickett gets some leeway considering he’s a rookie, but Trubisky often plays so badly that it paves the way for Pickett to come into the game.

The organization recently traded Chase Claypool to the Bears, leaving Diontae Johnson as their only competent receiver on the team.

In their game against the Buffalo Bills, the Steelers lost 38-3, a 35 point beatdown that stands as the biggest blowout loss so far this season.

Now the Terrible Towels are meant to be taken literally.

#2 – The Carolina Panthers

Where do I even start with this team?

Carolina finally got the hint that Matt Rhule was a terrible coach, and they fired him after starting 1-4.

Christian McCaffrey finally said enough was enough, and he was traded to the San Francisco 49ers; now he is back to the Bay Area where he used to play for the Stanford Cardinal.

With McCaffrey gone, the already putrid offense is now doing even worse.

Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold are the worst quarterback duo in the league. Neither of them look even close to competent, and it seems like they aren’t going to get any better.

Robbie Anderson, the team’s only competent receiver, was traded after throwing a temper tantrum.

The Panthers also blew an easily winnable game against the Atlanta Falcons, the team who is notorious for not winning games.

But even with this list of failures, the Panthers organization isn’t the worst team in the NFL.

#1 – The Houston Texans

Thank goodness the Astros won the World Series because this city’s football team is an absolute dumpster fire.

The Texans are sitting at a 1-6-1 record, otherwise known as the worst record in the league. The team also has yet to win a game at home, which makes the Texans the only NFL team that hasn’t done so.

There isn’t a single piece of talent on this team. One may argue that the only exception could be Brandin Cooks, but he’s injured and disgruntled that he wasn’t traded to another team at the trade deadline.

The team’s only win is against the Jacksonville Jaguars, a team that went a combined 4-29 before the season started, and they had a tie against the Indianapolis Colts, a team that made up half of those wins for the Jaguars.

The Texans did get some draft picks from the Browns after they traded Deshaun Watson. So even if the Texans are bad enough to get the 1st overall pick in next year’s draft, the team will get a nice compensation prize from Cleveland that makes for some good building blocks for the future.

Currently, this team is at rock-bottom, and there is no denying that this team is tremendously bad.

With all of the bad teams in the NFL, it is possible to rebuild them. Good management decisions such as coach hirings, contracts, and trades can make a team go from rock-bottom to Super Bowl contender in a short amount of time. So, even though these are some tough times for these teams, there is some light at the end of the tunnel.
