Following a comfortable win over the defending state champions in EGR, the boys varsity lacrosse team stared straight into matchups with Forest Hills Eastern and Okemos on back-to-back days. 

Since FHC’s 2021 season ended abruptly at the hands of FHE, Thursday night’s showdown meant a little more than just a win or loss. For the Rangers, it was personal.

Even with the added motivation, they didn’t have to prove anything. Their 11-0 record heading into the game spoke for itself. Eastern also lost two of its top senior scorers in John Morgan and Kevin Sprague. So, it was no surprise when the Rangers jumped on top early.

FHC was cruising in the first half, led by connected play from the senior class. Jack McNamara, John Tomsheck, and Miles Duiven all showed their experience early on with this offensive togetherness. 

The second half was more of a struggle for FHC. Despite holding a sizeable lead, the connectivity and tenacity seemed to disappear. The boys ended up avenging last year’s squad with a 14-6 win, but they didn’t finish it out like they wanted to.

Less than 24 hours later, FHC lacrosse traveled to Lansing to take on Okemos High School. It was more of the same offensively, with Tomsheck and junior Jonah McConnell taking over the game at attack. The two combined for 15 of the team’s 21 goals.

A whopping nine of those came from Jonah. It was one of the best performances the program has seen in recent years.

“I just work hard every day in practice and challenge myself to get better,” Jonah said. 

The defense allowed 12 goals, which was less than ideal. As the postseason approaches, it is crucial that all components of this FHC group are at their best. The Rangers certainly will have a target on their back.

“As we head closer to the playoffs, we just need to remember that every team we face has us circled on their calendar,” Jonah said. “So, we need to work on not overlooking teams.”

FHC now sits at a perfect 13-0. Its next matchup will be against Midland on Friday, May 13, at home at 6:00 PM.

If the Rangers can come out on top, it will add to an already-long list of incredible feats this season.
