Varsity softball breaks out in double-header against Grand Rapids Christian
Heading into Monday’s double-header versus Grand Rapids Christian, the varsity softball team had seen flashes of its true potential in previous games. Other than a team-high of 21 runs scored against West Catholic, the girls had struggled to score runs consistently throughout the season. They started to heat up after the Lowell series and that showed in Monday’s double-header.
In game one, the Rangers wasted no time and immediately got out to a sizeable lead. They almost matched the number of runs they scored against West Ottawa with eight total runs in the first inning.
Along with the big first inning, the team was led by its pitching force. The aces only gave up one run after three innings and three runs after the game was all said and done. FHC would win by a score of 14-3 in game one.
The following matchup entailed a similar result but there were some differences between both games. Once again, the Rangers jumped out to a fast start, gaining a 6-3 lead after the first inning. FHC only built on its momentum from there and by the time it was past the fourth inning, the Rangers increased their lead to 16-8. Forest Hills Central handily defeated Grand Rapids Christian 21-11 in the second game.
Junior Maya Holser increased her home-run total to over five after hitting one against the Eagles. Jamison Strutz played well throughout the double-header, as she pitched and had a double. Lacey Smith also pitched and she had an impressive performance on the mound. Lauren Halverson made a leaping catch in the outfield to end a jam.
These two wins bring the varsity softball team to 5-9 with a 3-4 conference record. In its upcoming game, the team faces Grand Rapids Christian on Wednesday, May 4 at 4:15 PM.
