Girls varsity lacrosse goes 1-1 on the week against Forest Hills Northern and Catholic Central
The girls varsity lacrosse team faced off against Forest Hills Northern and Grand Rapids Catholic Central this week and went 1-1 between the two games. On Monday, the Rangers lost 13-10 to Northern. With that being said, the girls turned it around on Wednesday and defeated Catholic Central 21-13.
The Rangers kept it close with the Huskies for the majority of the game; this was considered to be an improvement following a bigger loss the year prior. Senior Julia Brown led the Rangers in goals; however, it was not enough to pull out the win.
“We held on the whole game and that’s a huge step up from the goal differential when we played them last year,” Brown commented.
On Wednesday, FHC turned it around and came out strong against the Cougars. Catholic Central was able to hang on for most of the game, causing a back-and-forth battle. In the third quarter, the Cougars brought it back to a two-goal game. Still, the Rangers were able to capitalize on Catholic Central’s mistakes and controlled the possession for the remaining time in the fourth quarter, leading them to an eight-goal victory.
“After two close and tough losses, we had a lot of intensity going into the game against Catholic Central,” junior Shannon Murphy said. “With only one sub, we used this game to improve on our fast transitions into a settled offense.”
Head coach Zoe Mamo was proud of the girls for putting together a complete game. It was a long and hard-fought victory for the Rangers.
“It was a tiring game for the girls as it was a lot of back and forth, but they continued to push for the full 50 minutes and came out strong right from the first whistle to the end of the game,” Mamo expressed. “They pulled it together to go on much-needed scoring runs throughout the game.”
The Rangers are now 4-2 on the season and will compete against Bloomfield and Birmingham this weekend at a play-day event.
Following the weekend event, the Rangers will face East Grand Rapids on Wednesday, April 27. For this game, both teams have come together to help spread awareness for mental health. This will be referred to as the “Be Nice” game. Each team has been involved with this organization for the last couple of weeks and they have learned the importance of mental health and how to deal with it.
