Boasting a 4-0 record, the FHC boys varsity lacrosse team began a three-game week on Tuesday when the boys hosted the Fighting Scots of Caledonia. The message for the Rangers was clear entering the night: play hard, together, and leave no room for doubt.
“The message was mainly to play with a lot of energy and not give Caledonia free possessions,” senior midfielder Nathan Sarjeant said.
Similar to last week’s matchup with GR Catholic Central, it was an all-around effort for FHC from the very beginning. Right when junior attack Jonah McConnell scored within minutes of the opening face-off and then hit Jake Koning for an easy goal, the Rangers were hit with a wave of confidence.
They sure did feed off of that confidence for the remainder of the outing.
Senior attackmen Miles Duiven and John Tomsheck would join the scoring party in the ensuing minutes, which Jonah followed by capping off the first quarter with another goal.
Leading 9-1 to begin the second quarter, the Rangers began to focus on maintaining a controlled, steady pace while also providing their signature punch.
Junior LSM Sam Sneider did just that on a one-man break that he punctuated by finding the back of the net. Then, a number of Rangers notched their first goal. Senior captain Jack McNamara, junior Carter Lyons, and sophomore Nolan Hartl all joined the action before halftime.
After last week’s game, head coach Andy Shira said that his group had a lot to work on defensively. So, the 15-2 halftime lead over Caledonia showed that the Rangers had turned it around in practice and showed out on that end.
FHC went on to win 18-4, but not before junior Reese Le and Magnus Salmon notched third-quarter goals to pour salt in the wound.
“We played pretty well and had fun,” senior Quentin Rudolph said. “It was great to find ways to improve in a game like that.”
FHC lacrosse wraps up its week with a 6:30 PM showdown against a fellow D-II contender in Orchard Lake St. Mary’s at FHC on Friday, April 22, before traveling to Brighton High School the following day for a 12:30 PM start.
