The Forest Hills varsity water polo team is in full swing as the spring sports season gets underway. With three games last week, they showed up ready to make a splash against West Ottawa, Zeeland, and Okemos.

To start off the week, on April 12, the girls faced off against Zeeland. Zeeland kept up with the FH girls up until the end, which eventually resulted in a heated overtime competition. Sadly for Forest Hills, it fell short 10-12 after overtime after a long and hard fight. The team might have lost, but this was only the first of three tries they would have to come out on top.

“Going into the next game, I think the team will be pushing themselves to the best of their ability trying to get the win,” junior Sydney Bacon said.

The girls’ second game of the week on April 14 was at home, where they dominated against West Ottawa. The girls swam hard during all four periods, and it paid off when they defeated West Ottawa again with a final score of 17-6. Although the team is a mix of Eastern, Northern, and Central students, key players of the game from FHC were Caroline Bell and Ashley Schenck, who both had big corner goals that helped guide the team to the win, along with big saves from junior goalie Sydney Bacon.

“The team did very well,” Caroline said. “We worked on new plays during practice, and we were able to use them during the games, which helped us.”

In the third and final game of the week for the varsity team on April 15, the girls competed in the District 2 Seeding Tournament going up against Okemos High School. The team went into the game wanting to go into the weekend with a 2-1 record, but unfortunately for the girls, the Okemos water polo team had other plans. The girls were beaten 6-15 by their opponents, which meant they would finish the week with a 1-2 record, only beating West Ottawa.

“Varsity beat West Ottawa but lost to Okemos and Zeeland with the Zeeland game going into overtime, so overall, we didn’t do too bad,” Ashley said.

The team will compete away against Grand Ledge High School on Tuesday, April 19, at 6:00 p.m.

“Everyone played really well together,” Sydney said. “There was a lot of communication between everyone; everyone played their best.”
