Varsity softball struggles in the first double-header of the season against a talented East Kentwood team
Heading into its first matchup of the season, the varsity softball team understood the importance of a double-header against East Kentwood. The Falcons are widely viewed as a top team in the area, so this would be a great test.
“We understand the level of play East Kentwood displayed last year and they are even better this year,” junior Maya Holser said. “It should be a tough game but also a winnable one.”
Maya was right about one aspect of the game–that it would be extremely difficult. Forest Hills struggled with the Falcons’ hitting right out the gate and that would be a common theme throughout the doubleheader. There were a handful of big plays in each game, including senior Alyssa Wierenga’s base hit to score Gabby Thompson. Holser also had a base hit to get Lauren Halverson home.
In her short time pitching, Jamison Strutz had an impressive stretch in which she did not give up a single run. Although Forest Hills showed sparks of its full potential, the Rangers were defeated 14-1 in the first game and 16-2 in the second game.
After two early losses, the Rangers start the year at 0-2. They look to collect themselves before taking on Zeeland West at home. They face the Dux on Thursday, April 14, at 4:15 PM.
