The girls varsity water polo team had a strong weekend, going right out of the gates. The team is off to a great start after going 2-1 on Saturday against Chelsea, Zeeland, and East Kentwood.

The Lady Rangers beat Chelsea and Zeeland on Saturday in their first two games of the season, setting them up for success in their third game. After a tough battle, though, the Rangers could not pull off the win against East Kentwood like they wanted to do, leaving them at 2-1 for the weekend and to start the season.

Senior Caroline Bell was proud of how the team worked together to get these wins and how it communicated during all three games.

“We did very well,” Caroline said. “We did a great job at communicating and working with each other, especially since it was only the first week of the season.”

Although the team won against Chelsea and Zeeland, the team really wanted to take down its rival, East Kentwood, because of last year’s record against the Falcons. Unfortunately for the Rangers, they didn’t end up winning the game; however, that doesn’t mean their fight to beat the Falcons is not over just yet. With unfinished business from last season, the team will only work harder now to finally get a win over the Falcons.

Junior Sydney VanLente is excited to see how the new kids on the team will step up in the upcoming weeks to help the team prove their dominance in the pool.

“I am really excited to see where this season takes us,” Sydney said. “We have a lot of new freshman and a few new sophomores, so it will be interesting to see the team dynamic with the player diversity we have this season. Even though we are small, I think we are going to be a pretty powerful team.”

The team has started its season off with a big splash, and the girls are getting fired up. The Lady Rangers will compete next on Tuesday, March 22, at Hudsonville High School at 7:00 p.m. Hudsonville poses a huge challenge for FHC.

“The team did pretty well; we beat both Zeeland and Chelsea, which was great,” sophomore Ashley Schenck said. “I think it was a great start to the season.”
