Postseason action looms in the distance for FHC bowling

The month of February hasn’t been kind to FHC bowling.

“Both teams [girls and boys] have struggled this month with aiming, and their spare shooting needs some work, so there have been some positives and negatives,” head coach Terry Metzner said.

FHC’s losing drought in February continued on Wednesday, as the hosting Rangers and Lady Rangers fell behind early with either mediocre or poor shots. While the girls ended up redeeming themselves with a baker-game win, the boys were down two baker games to a top-three team in the OK White.

In the individual bouts, the storyline almost flip-flopped from team to team. Other than one tie in the first round of individuals, the boys won every one of their matches in the first, including a resounding 175-164 win for junior Peyton Price.

“Although we played badly early on in the baker games, I thought all of us showed that we could get back up,” Peyton said. “After the baker games, we were a different team.”

Unfortunately for FHC, GRC stomped on its chances of escaping with a statement victory by bowling scores closer to 200 in the second round. This barrage from the Eagles proved to be too much for the Ranges to handle, yet there’s no denying that for a second there, FHC was the one being chased—not the other way around.

Following their baker-game win, the girls weren’t as successful as the boys were in individuals, losing all but one match to GRC. The one bowler who broke the losing streak was freshman Sam Sturgis, who bowled a 115 to beat GRC’s Megan Szotko.

As of now, on February 18, the boys and girls teams are winless this month. Obviously, this could change if the Rangers make a run in the OK White League Tournament on Saturday; however, that would mean both teams would have to hold off attacks from elite teams like Northview, Grand Rapids Christian, and Greenville. Only time will tell if they can.
