JV Football dominates Forest Hills Northern 27-0 to win its second consecutive game

Just one short week after shutting out Grand Rapids Christian in its first game, the JV Football team faced off against its primary rival: Forest Hills Northern. After many offensive struggles in week one, the team was able to make proper adjustments in practice in order to remain undefeated on the season. After scoring just two touchdowns in their first game, the Ranger offense got its mojo back and came out with a sense of urgency that was unmatched by the Huskies. With offensive help from sophomores Rowan Clay and Chase Robinson, the Ranger offense rose to the challenge and dominated the opponent by a sure-handed score of 27-0.
In contrast to a slow first quarter last week, FHC’s offense set the tone early. Rowan opened the game with a first-drive touchdown run from 5 yards out. This early score gave the Ranger offense a level of confidence that was unprecedented in the first game. With the touchdown from Rowan, FHC took the early lead and never looked back.
“It felt good to get a jump on the game and to see our offense flowing like that,” Clay remarked when asked about his early impact. “I think that the offense was very sharp, and we all executed and did our jobs.”
Following a well-executed onside kick recovery, the Rangers wasted little time. Continuing the relentless offensive attack, sophomore Levi Mckenzie found Chase in the end zone for a majestic 20-yard touchdown pass. Forest Hills Northern faced a 14-0 deficit before even having its first offensive possession. Getting as many players involved as possible proved to be a viable strategy for FHC, as Robinson celebrated his first touchdown of the season.
“The coaches called great plays and got me the ball in open space,” Chase said. “Running the ball helped open up the passing game, which allowed the touchdown play call”.
Sitting on a comfortable lead, FHC’s offense did not show any signs of letting up. Freshman JT Hartman continued his impressive season by running for two more touchdowns in the second quarter. These 5 and 70 yard runs proved to be a breaking point for the opposing team, as FHC mounted a 27-0 lead in just the first half alone. Although the defense did its job once again, the offense was the story of the night.
For the rest of the game, the Rangers completely controlled the pace. Regardless of the zero points scored in the second half, all 11 players on the offense and defense worked together in unison to provide an all-around dominating performance. FHC cruised to a final score of 27-0, proving to be one of the toughest opponents in the conference. After the game, head coach Ty Hallock had an ultimate appreciation for the spirit and confidence of his players.
“There were lots of improvement from last week. Most importantly, with the confidence of knowing what to do, the kids are playing harder,” Hallock praised postgame. “There is no substitute for playing like it matters.”
With the blowout win over FHN, the Rangers move to 2-0 on the season. Next week, they will host Byron Center in hopes to stay undefeated.
