Freshman Morgan Cerny proves she has the spirit of a Ranger in everything she does

Putting on the greens and running on the field, freshman Morgan Cerny dominates playing both golf and lacrosse. Morgan’s dedication to working hard in every setting makes her a key athlete and an incredibly talented student in school.

As a freshman in high school, Morgan has a lot on her plate. She has been playing lacrosse for about five years now, but golf didn’t come as easy to her as lacrosse did.

“I played golf a little bit when I was younger, but I didn’t play much. I knew how to play, but I was not good at it at all. Then this year came, and I took a few private lessons with Izzy [Scholler], and it was pretty fun,” Morgan said. “I got better and better at it, and then my coach helped me a lot. He is a lifesaver considering how bad I was before the season, but then [I] got so much better.”

Golf has taken up most of Morgan’s time as a new high schooler so far this year, meaning she spends a lot of time with her team. Coming onto a brand new team isn’t always easy, though, especially when you have older girls with tons of experience to keep up with.

“Well, at first, I was really nervous, obviously. I haven’t really been on a bunch of teams with people who were older than me, but I got to know all the sophomores that are so sweet, like Kiera [Kemppainen] and Claire [Marvin]. They are my favorites; I love them all,” Morgan revealed.

Her team’s season was highly successful as a whole with a record of 11-2, and with that much excitement, the ladies were always on the go, ready for their next challenge.

“It was good, and I had a lot of fun. It was my first year, so I was a little nervous at first, but after the first few matches that I played in, I had a blast. I got to know the girls really well, and they were all so nice.”

Her teammate fellow freshman Izzy Scholler reflected on how Morgan really brightened up and impacted the season for the team.

“Morgan is very fun, and she is a bubbly person. She can be a little bit crazy, but she is so fun,“ Izzy said. “Sometimes I would get down on myself, but I would usually play with Morgan, and she would make me happy. She did it with the whole team too. She would make everything so fun.”

Morgan’s presence on the golf team improved the girls’ morales, and she can’t wait to come back next year.

“I really want to do it next year. It will definitely be different now that there are going to be younger kids on the team, but I am still really excited to hopefully have some fun.”

On top of all the golf she does, she trades in her clubs for a lacrosse stick in the off-season. Her two sports are quite different, but Morgan loves them all the same.

“I also play lacrosse and love it. I have been playing for probably about five years now maybe. I am ok at it, but I really like lacrosse, and it’s so much fun. It’s a lot different than golf, though.”

Morgan is a truly remarkable athlete and addition to the high school. Her positive attitude and fun-loving personality make her an amazing friend and a super outgoing person. She puts the time in, and all of her hard work pays off. Next season has so much to offer for this young Lady Ranger, and she can’t wait to watch herself grow as a golfer and individual.

“I loved golf because it wasn’t like a complete team sport. We are, of course, a team, but there is also an individual part of it where you get to do your own thing, which I liked,” Morgan said. “You can be you and do your own thing but also be a part of this big team, and we were all really close.”
