Over the weekend, the varsity baseball team participated in the EGR Gerken Tournament, showcasing some of the best teams in West Michigan for high school baseball. Junior Joe Seurynck gave a great push for the Rangers on Friday night against Jenison, while fellow junior Josh Smith gave FHC a three-for-three day against East Grand Rapids. Despite the great individual performances, the Rangers fell in both games 8-1 and 9-1.

Fresh off of a sweep by the Forest Hills Northern Huskies, the boys looked to finally get another win after a long skid for the past week and a half.

On Friday, the team hosted the Jenison Wildcats, a team that displayed great pitching combined with a clutch offense that produced a lot of runs. Joe took the mound in game one and was dominant. He pitched a total of six innings while only giving up three hits, five runs, and striking out 10 batters. Most of the damage came in the seventh inning for Jenison, as the Wildcats put a five-spot up on the Rangers and extended their lead to an 8-1 advantage. The only run for FHC came in the sixth inning when Joe drove in a run off of a double into center field. In the end, Jenison pulled away with an 8-1 win with its pitcher only giving up two hits and one run in seven innings of work.

On Saturday, the boys traveled to East Grand Rapids to face the Pioneers for the third time this year, and just like the last matchup, nothing was going in the way of the Rangers. Freshman Carson Custer took the mound for his second start of the season. This time around, it wasn’t as pretty. Carson gave up five hits with four earned runs in three total innings of work. Along with that, Carson struck out five while walking two batters. The only scoring from the Rangers came in the seventh and final inning when senior Maguire Mahachek flew out into center field for a sacrifice fly. In the end, the Pioneers offense was too much for the Ranger defense, as the team lost its fifth game in a row by a score of 9-1.

The record for the Rangers is now 12-19. On Tuesday, June 1, they will face Comstock Park in a doubleheader at FHC at 4:15 PM.
