The girls varsity lacrosse team began playoffs with a 15-4 win over Mattawan on Wednesday, May 26. The Rangers took control early against the Wildcats and never looked back. Head coach Zoe Mamo was proud to see her team’s improvements throughout the season and was pleased with her team’s overall performance.

“Overall, it was a good game. [The girls] showed a lot of growth and improvement, which was awesome to see in our first playoff game,” coach Mamo said. “They were able to work on some of the little things to help us in our next game.”

The Rangers excelled in all parts of the game on Wednesday; the offense never stopped attacking the Wildcat defense and took care of the ball. As a result, the Rangers were able to put the ball in the net continuously. This is in large part because of the girls’ defensive play. The Rangers displayed just the game they were looking for to start the playoffs.

“Our entire team was pumped up and ready to go,” sophomore Shannon Murphy said. “From the opening draw to the final seconds of the game, every girl contributed. We all came out fast, strong, and as a team.”

The Rangers move on to the quarterfinals to face off against the Pioneers of East Grand Rapids. This will be the third meeting this season for the two programs, as they are very familiar with one another. The 9-1 Pioneers have proven time and time again that they are a powerhouse program in the state of Michigan. However, the Rangers feel as if they will be able to give the Pioneers a run for their money.

“Our next game will be tough, but I think the girls are ready to have a good and strong mindset going into it,” coach Mamo said. “[The girls] have gained a lot of confidence, especially after our last game against East Grand Rapids.”
