Ruthie VanSkiver leads girls varsity soccer to a 1-0 win against Grand Haven

Junior Ruthie VanSkiver saved the girls varsity soccer team as she scored the game-winning goal in the Rangers’ 1-0 win against Grand Haven. This game was a defensive matchup from the start and truly proved the resilience from both sides with the intense back-and-forth tendencies.

The first half started off with several chances from Grand Haven. These chances were created from the quick strikes from the Buccaneer offense which were manufactured by the constant battle in the center of the field in front of the Rangers’ goal. At the helm of this wall of a defense was junior goalie Ava Wilberding. Along with her was senior Autumn Burns, who yet again led her defense to another big game. This lethal combination held strong, as the Buccaneers put shot after shot at the Rangers’ net with no success.

At the other end, the offensive force for FHC put together a collage of talented moves to get through the opposing defense, but couldn’t quite finish the job. This was until the middle of the second half when Ruthie put together a show of magnificence and buried the ball into the back of the net off of a ricochet. This goal put the Rangers up by one, which was all they needed as the final score was 1-0.

This game puts the girls at 3-0, with their next game on April 19 against the Red Arrows of Lowell. This is a big game for the Rangers, as it is their first conference game of the season, and will be a must-need early win.
